Random Acts of Thanksgiving

We decided to celebrate Thanksgiving by giving back to those in our local community by offering to pay for their groceries at Food Lion locations in Kenansville, Spout Springs, Skibo Drive, Hope Mills, and the Westwood Shopping Center!

“We gave away over $3,000 in gift cards and got a lot of smiles back,” said President and CEO of Bragg Mutual, Steve Foley. “It’s the season of giving and that’s what we hope to accomplish — to give a gift. But we received back more than we gave in the form of smiles, stories, appreciation, and friendship. It was a humbling and heartwarming experience to help our members and community members alike.”

“This was indeed a wonderful experience and it made me feel very proud to be a part of an organization that gives back to the community,” said Natasha Cannon, Teller at Bragg Mutual’s Kenansville Branch. “My heart was touched as individuals shared their personal stories and expressions. I’m already looking forward to this Random Act of Thanksgiving next year!”

We hope to continue our Random Acts of Thanksgiving for years to come as a way to thank our community members for showing Bragg Mutual so much support over the years!

Statement on Bank Failures

The weekend of March 10th saw Banking Regulators from the State of California and New York and also the FDIC close 2 very large banks, 1 in California and 1 in New York. These banks failed because of the poor management of Assets and Liabilities at those banks, it is not a reflection of a systemic economic failure. What does that mean for you, our member? Your money is safe at Bragg Mutual Federal Credit Union.

Silicon Valley Bank was heavily concentrated in loans to startup companies or venture capital investors tied to FinTechs and cryptocurrency clients. Signature Bank was heavily focused on banking cryptocurrency depositors. Heavy concentrations focused in one area, loans or deposits, is not the normal business model for banks or credit unions in the US financial ecosystem.

Bragg Mutual does not make startup business loans or offer venture capital investments. Our loan portfolio is well diversified, and we do not hold any deposits in Cryptocurrencies. We bank our members, not corporations. We are owned by our members, and not investors or corporations that do not have deposit accounts with us.

Federal Regulators took swift action to ensure every depositor at these two banks are able to access their funds. The FDIC will pay out in full, including any amount over the FDIC insured deposit.

The FDIC insures deposits at banks while credit unions are insured by a sister agency, the NCUA. Credit Union members have never lost a penny of insured savings at a federally insured credit union. Rest assured your money is safe at Bragg Mutual.

Gift Card Scams are on the Rise

Someone might ask you to pay for something by putting money on a gift card, like a Google Play or iTunes card, and then giving them the numbers on the back of the card. If they ask you to do this, they’re trying to scam you. No real business or government agency will ever insist you pay them with a gift card. Anyone who demands to be paid with a gift card is a scammer. Read on to learn more about gift card scams.
