The History of Bragg Mutual FCU

Bragg Mutual Federal Credit Union was founded in 1952 by seven Civil Service employees at what was then Fort Bragg, North Carolina. These founders, working under the newly renamed U.S. Department of Defense, came together with a shared vision: to create a credit union that served the financial needs of civilian employees on base.

On January 1, 1952, Bragg Civilian Federal Credit Union was officially chartered with 200 original members. The first branch opened later that year on post at Fort Bragg.

Expanding Our Reach

In 1979, the Board of Directors voted to change the name to Bragg Mutual Federal Credit Union. This move marked a significant step in our growth, allowing us to serve a wider membership across Cumberland County. Our field of membership soon expanded to include local governments and businesses throughout the region.

In 1981, we acquired Kelly Fay FCU, the credit union serving Goodyear employees, and added local city and county government employees. By 1982, employees of Cumberland County Hospital System were welcomed into membership—a group that remains one of our largest today under Cape Fear Valley Health.

Over the years, Bragg Mutual FCU has continued to grow through mergers and community expansion. We’ve welcomed members from Duplin County Teachers FCU and College Heights FCU and now serve over 100 select employee groups across Southeastern North Carolina.

Serving Southeastern North Carolina

Today, Bragg Mutual FCU proudly serves individuals who live, work, worship, attend school, or conduct business in Cumberland and Harnett Counties. Our largest member groups include Cape Fear Valley Health employees, Goodyear associates, military veterans, and local, state, and federal government employees and contractors.

With nearly 70 years of service, we’re proud to be the fourth-oldest federal credit union in North Carolina. As we continue to grow, our mission remains clear: to operate as an independent, member-owned financial cooperative that serves and supports the people of Southeastern North Carolina.
